Sometimes the simplest of things can be the hardest to find. Many t-shirts are a dime a dozen, making it hard to come across a great piece that will remain a staple in your wardrobe for years to come. There are so many factors that make a great t-shirt. When I’m scouting out the perfect tee, I look for the three F’s: the fabric, the fit and the feel.
The fabric: While rayon could have a nice feel, it’s a fabric that I tend to stay away from because of how it washes. Rayon shrinks exceptionally in the wash and there’s nothing I hate more than having to stretch out, re-shape and hang dry a t-shirt! Try to stick to cotton, polyester, modal or spandex. Blends are okay too!
The fit: Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a t-shirt is just a t-shirt and they all fit the same! You’ve got crew necks, scoop necks, v-necks, boat necks, fitted tees, flowy tees, boxy tees…and the list goes on. Keep your body type in mind when picking out a style. Also, think about your intent for wearing – Do you want a looser tee that you can tuck in to high-waisted jeans? Or maybe a high-low style to wear with leggings.
The feel: A classic tee should never be two things: scratchy or stiff. Believe it or not, those kinds of t-shirts are out there! Just because the fabric seems like the right mix, doesn’t mean it will feel good. Always take the extra minute to try it on!
I’ve rounded up 5 must-have essential tees that meet all of the above criteria:
I had never shopped at Express until I discovered their fairly new line, Express One Eleven via a blog post on The Viva Luxury. This tee looked like the most comfortable piece of clothing I would ever put on my body…and it was. I cannot say enough about this line and how these t-shirts have held up over the past year. I literally have every color x 3 in tees, tanks, you name it.
*I’m also a HUGE fan of this tank by EOE.
My closet is a rainbow full of these amazing tees by J.Crew. The vintage cotton has a light feel, and as an added bonus, they wash great! Look out for bright pastels in the Spring and Summer months. My favorite color at the moment is soft aquamarine.
*If you’re looking for a looser fit, I would recommend sizing up!
A bit on the pricey side but well worth the cost is VINCE.’s ‘Little Boy’ tee. Known for their supersoft pima cotton/modal blends, you really can’t go wrong with a piece like this from VINCE. This is a great choice if you’re looking for a more fitted tee. My favorite thing about VINCE. is how long-lasting their pieces are. I still have tops from years ago that I refuse to give up because they remain such great condition!
*Check out the long sleeve version here.
A similar fabric and feel to J.Crew’s Vintage Tee is the Whisper Cotton Crewneck by Madewell. A great, classic staple for your closet that can be cuffed at the sleeves for a vintage look. Airy & light, you’ll want this one in every color too.
Last but certainly not least is a must-have shirt from Alexander Wang’s T line. A classic pocket tee, this piece comes in only the basics: black, white and grey. Like #3, it will make a bit of a dent in your bank account but if you value you look of the plain white tee, it’s well worth your money.
*If you’re more of a v-neck kind of girl, you’ll swoon over this superfine tee.
